Founded in 1954, the Society for French Historical Studies promotes scholarship focused on the history of France from the medieval era to the twenty-first century. The Society also champions research into history beyond France itself, to include the hexagon’s historical relationships with the rest of the world, including North America, Africa, and Asia, as well as other societies on the European continent.

The SFHS is very proud to publish the quarterly, French Historical Studies, long recognized internationally as one of the premier journals in the discipline of history.

The annual meetings hosted by the SFHS have been particularly important venues for the dissemination of the highest quality research on French history in both English and French, and have offered countless opportunities for productive interchange and collaboration among scholars from the United States and Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, and beyond.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Society for French Historical Studies, we write to inform you that our annual conference, scheduled to take place in March at Hofstra University on Long Island, is postponed.  We know that this news will not come as a surprise, given everything that has happened during the past months.  As the pandemic continues to exact a high toll, it has become unclear whether Hofstra would even be able to welcome us this coming spring.  And given cuts to travel budgets, the inadvisability of travel, and the difficulty of social distancing at conferences, it seemed unwise (if not impossible) to move forward as we had planned.

But let us not despair!  Our joint Rudé/SFHS conference this July has shown how valuable other forms of professional exchange can be!  We are so grateful to Kirsty Carpenter, Tracy Adams, David Kammerling Smith, and the others who have demonstrated how enlightening and productive virtual interchange can be!  We want to keep up that spirit of innovation this coming year.  We are particularly interested in using this opportunity to think about new ways to build community, perhaps through themed workshops, meetings of peer groups sharing scholarship, discussions with authors of books that relate to our commitments to support diversity and real inclusion in our profession, and more.  If you have any ideas for the kind of programming that *you* would like to see, please let us know as soon as possible.  Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available!

Please allow us to make one appeal here.  Many people maintain their memberships in the SFHS only when they attend the annual conferences.  These two years of virtual activities in lieu of our in-person conferences are taking a toll on the Society’s finances.  Not only do we host conferences (both in person and virtually), but we publish a world-class journal that is a premier space to publish your scholarship, and we also support the field through prizes and awards.  We work to promote our scholarly communities by joint advocacy with our fellow societies.  All of this is made possible thanks to membership fees and contributions.  Please, if you can afford it, be sure to join or renew your membership. You can help us all thrive. If you are in the fortunate position to take out a lifetime membership, we would be grateful if you would consider it.  See here for all membership information: http://www.dukeupress.edu/society-for-french-historical-studies-sfhs.

Thank you very much!  And rest assured that we will be back in contact with more information.
